Balkanesque & Asia Minoresque: Interesting stops in Bulgaria
It’s summer. The road to Turkey’s Kırkpınar (if you’re living in Romania) passes through Bulgaria. We’re neighbours. 😊 Still, it feels good to explore different routes every chance you get.
I can now recommend—
Places that guarantee disconnection
Madara
Not too far from Varna (less than 90 km west), there’s this place where a horseman was carved into a rock in the late 7th century/early 8th century to celebrate Bulgar Khan Tervel. Bulgars were migratory people; when they settled, they showed good taste. The entire area has terrific energy, growing from the caves towards the open areas where people would eat together.
Zheravna
Stone and wood – these are the construction materials around the central Bulgarian village. Life is slow here; you get to take your time. Bring cash – there are many lovely stores along the cobblestone pathways.
Emen Canyon
The trail starts with a path into the forest; you then descend and ascend until you realise the closeness to Emen Waterfall. It is easier to hear it than see it. The trek is easy even when it is hot outside, as it features shady parts, springs, and a feel-good energy. We only had about an hour to spare, but we would return there in a heartbeat.
A cool beach
Some 18 minutes south of Sozopol, you’ll find fine sand, tranquillity, and sand lilies if you visit Arkutino Beach in July. There were waves when we visited; the Black Sea was turquoise.
A different kind of accommodation
Arbanashki Han is set in Arbanasi, very close to Veliko Tarnovo. It is the perfect illustration of the area’s architecture and style, with a delicious breakfast included.
An excellent meal
If you decide to grab a bite in Ruse, there’s Terassa, a restaurant with a magnificent view over the Danube and kind people working there.
On the other hand, if you find yourself in Sozopol, Orion is a family restaurant with an enchanting sea view, fabulous food, and friendly service. The prices are fair, too!
So, there you go: some food for thought if you are considering a Bulgarian holiday or simply passing through!
