Very short guide on how to see the wild horses of Livno in September

We were there. We were in Livno three years ago. However, circumstances brewing in my life made me write this piece only now.

I have been drawn to horses my whole life – and I always joke that I am half-horse, as a Sagittarius. :-) So, when I heard about them, I knew we needed to get to Livno. And I convinced Marcel!

 

When we returned from Korčula, the weather had gotten colder. Still, we woke up to sunshine, which was reassuring.

Our home in Livno was Apartman Luka, a very comfortable flat, with a nice kitchen and a patio where we ate dinner.

I loved the other meals at Fokus. We tried various (and delicious!) Bosnian desserts, had burek several times, and befriended our lovely waitress Belma. We told her about our great wish to see the horses!

 

Everything I researched left me a bit confused. I decided to write down the steps, especially if you aim to see the wild horses on your own.

• We started with the Stari Most [Old Bridge] and the source of the Bistrica River, known as Duman. It is a very picturesque area, especially during autumn.

• Then, take the road to Krug Planina. If you have a low car, like ours, you may have to park along the road.

• The good news is that, if you continue on foot, you will make less noise and increase your chances of seeing the horses. They are big.

• Look around, notice if there is motion. The horses roam around together, so you’ll spot many of them!

• Walk, then stop and be patient. Your wait will be worth it.

 

We were so grateful we saw the horses! The rain drove us down the mountain. We celebrated with Belma and a hurmašice; she was very happy for us.

 

Our evening ended with boiled corn. We were finally ready to bid summer farewell.
